Dueling DIY: Two Steps Forward…

kitchen tile 2

This week, I've been completely high on the getting-it-dones.  Not only had my dad and I done the first round of scooping mud onto the drywall panels in his dining room, but I'd actually managed to get the grout finished in my kitchen in the same weekend. BOOM.  And I also sealed the grout around the stove, which meant I could finally shimmy her back into her rightful place along the wall.  Like a real kitchen or something. I need to do a little cleaning on the stovetop, and then … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: Still Backsplashing

Even though most of my weekend was spent at Mom and Dad's installing drywall, I did manage to eke out a few minutes (basically, in the time it takes Charlie to do her business & do a little playing outside) to get some of the grouting done on the kitchen backsplash. I chose to stick with the white bucket of Simple Grout (see here for why it gave me pause) and hope for better results on a larger wall.  And happily, that's exactly how it went.  So the little nook next to the fridge may not … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: “Real Quick”

You'd think that after skipping last week's Dueling DIY update, I'd be all BAM, look at my fully-grouted kitchen walls.  But then you'd be very wrong.  Optimistic, of course, and I'd be grateful for that... but still wrong. No, all it seems I managed to do was this: Which wouldn't have even happened at all if I hadn't just forced myself to do it "real quick" under the premise of needing to have something to be updating you about this week (I guess then I can be happy that the whole … [Read more...]

Sofa King Excited About My Kitchen Backsplash Tile

sofa king excited

Getting rid of the last of the wallpaper wasn't the only accomplishment over the weekend.  Today's Dueling DIY update is probably going to be the biggest I've had so far.  And I'm sofa king excited about it (if you don't get what that means, just say it REALLY LOUD to your coworkers in the break room and see how they react... ). Ready? BOOM.  Granted, it's not Carrie's mega-huge score of soapstone, but you know what that is?  It's a fully tiled wall.  Next to a countertop that's … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: How to Prep Kitchen Walls for a Tile Backsplash

Everyone who is finished tiling the kitchen, take one step forward.  Not so fast, Sarah... Today's Dueling DIY update is all about the prep for my tile backsplash.  As you may have noticed from Instagram, the good news there is that yes, I have my tile!  In my possession.  Finally.  And it's going to be awesome.  Just look at these beauties: Classic.  Will let the star (my walnut butcher block countertops) shine.  And even better, they come with built-in spacers on each side of the … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: All the White Moves

white painted cabinet doors - paint pyramid

This past week, I've been sick with the flu.  Which is to say, my third illness in some fashion since Thanksgiving.  Which is to say, I've been super pissed off.  I'm already starting to feel much better, but it completely trashed my weekend plans, so I've just been resting for the last week (I figure having my third bout in as many months is enough of my body telling me to slow the eff down already; I've been listening). And yet, somehow, little elves must be sneaking into the house to … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: Steady as She Goes

kitchen cabinets

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another Dueling DIY  update!  In case you missed it, the concept is pretty simple:  another blogger and I go head to head each week... which basically keeps me in line and on task.  The smack talk is just for the fun of it. For this particular installment, which I've dubbed "Clash of the Kitchens", I'm squaring off with Carrie from Brick City Love.  Who has been working wonders on her kitchen thus far.  The brick wall alone put Carrie at an early … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: Window Molding Strategery

(I know it's not a word, but it always makes me think of an SNL skit and cracks me up.) Back with another Dueling DIY update!  Progress may still be slow-going for me, but at least this little challenge with Carrie is keeping me motivated.  (In case you missed it, here are updates 1 and 2.) When my uncle came to visit for the kitchen makeover in October, we ran into a little bit of a snag on the first couple of days, making it necessary for us to find things to do until we could … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: Invisible Progress

Here we go!  First update of the new Dueling DIY: Kitchens battle.  If you missed the announcement last week, Carrie from Brick City Love and I are squaring off, and we're posting each Wednesday to show you how we're progressing on our projects (and also talk a little smack, because who wouldn't like two bloggers giving each other the stink-eye and threatening to use a nail gun as a weapon?). So, let's get down to bid-ness on my kitchen.  And its complete lack of visual progress.  But I … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: Clash of the Kitchens

Yup.  This project has been going on long enough.  And since last year's Staircase Showdown with Kit was excellent for getting me off my lazy ass bones to make over the front entryway, I'm invoking its motivational powers once again.  If you missed it the first time, the gist is pretty simple:  a blog friend and I talked some smack, squared off, and both redid the same part of our house.  We then posted about it each week as a way to stay on task (since we both had trouble finishing a project, … [Read more...]

A Good Run

stairs runner_

I think I have finally found my stair runner. You may remember this project from the spring, right?  Kit from DIY Diva and I squared off in a competition we called "Dueling DIY".  The goal was that each of us would work on our staircase - and more importantly, actually finish a project for a change (since both of us are compulsive project starters, but finishing?  Meh).  We also invited you guys to play along and work on your own stairs (since for me, a bunch of like-minded tool addicts on … [Read more...]

Dueling DIY: The Challenge Ends… The Project Continues

staircase challenge

For those of you who haven't been following along until now, let's recap: another (fantastically awesome) blogger and I have been challenging each other each week in an attempt to motivate each other to just complete one project already.  As a compulsive project starter, I seem to bounce from one project in the house to another, never really "finishing" any of them (which let's face it, is really hard to do in a top-to-bottom fashion when you don't work for HGTV).  We've been calling the … [Read more...]
