Light Fixture Progress

Ramping up for another exam week (yes, they really are as frequent as they seem - I'm already counting down the days until this mini-mester is over and I can have a normal life again).I'm spending any free DIY time to work on the staircase (new update on that tomorrow for Dueling DIY Tuesday), and a few scattered plans like my fun little light fixture project.  Last time I posted about it, I'd only collected a handful of supplies (though to be fair, I did buy out the store's entire quantity, … [Read more...]

Sputnik Pursuits

I have said on more than one occasion that I have project A.D.D. (For a brief moment, I was going to call it "PADD" for short.  And then I realized that referring to myself as "succumbing to PADD" or "it's PADD time again" would make me sound like I am really over-sharing).My project A.D.D. is the reason why I can't keep my house clean.  I stop and start so frequently you'd think I was my old Mercury Sable (ba-dum-bum).  And not keeping the house clean is the reason why I can't take updated … [Read more...]

A Futzing Find

wire bowl

My drill crapped out on me last night.  And don't you think it's perfect timing considering the project I decided to take on this week? And instead of immediately going to the store to buy a new one, I futzed around Target's clearance aisle after work yesterday.  Because if there's one thing I'm good at, I'm brilliant at wasting time.  Gold medal in the Procrastinator Olympics over here.  But I'm glad I did, because I found several of these: Technically, they are wire bowls.  I'm holding it … [Read more...]

Lighting Luck

I find it nearly impossible to stay focused on a single task in the house.  So when I can't take the mess anymore, I let go by finding a finishing touch of some kind - usually a pillow, rug, or a piece of art.  Lately, I seem to be on a light fixture streak. It all started with an unexpected discovery at a brief trip to TJ Maxx.  Still feeling zero buyer's remorse.  These suckers are staying. My usual perusing through Pinterest later the same week turned up this photo:Source: Uploaded by user via … [Read more...]

Get Your Fix(ture)

If you follow the Ugly Duckling House on Twitter, you may have seen my recent lighting obsession... well, explode.  No, I didn't get hacked.  I just can't get enough of funky pendant lighting and have been posting all of my finds to my Pinterest inspiration board.  I'm especially loving lighting that is Moroccan-inspired or Turn-of-the-Century looking (you may recall my swoon fest last month). If you are in the market for light fixtures and think that $1000+ is a reasonable price tag (you lucky, … [Read more...]

The Ol’ Switcheroo

Here's a simple concept.Light switch goes up, light goes on.  Light switch goes down, light goes off.Not so in the UD House.Until recently, all three of my upstairs bedrooms have had ceiling fans (ugly ones, of course) that required a pull cord to turn the light on and off.  The switch next to the doorway is just to psych you out every. single. time. you walk into the room.  My lifelong habit of flipping a light switch when entering a dark room still happens in this house even when I know … [Read more...]

On The List: Sconce Me Up

(Sorry about the funky title, I've got Glee on the brain)When was the last time you saw an inspiration pic, and your brain screamed at you?  I can remember when it squealed at me, but when I saw the below pic, my internal voice (quite loudly) shouted, "(first , then) I need THOSE!!!"Makes a grown woman cry (tee hee).Case in point:  I need (not want - "want" is such a wimpy word in this case) these wall lamps for my master bedroom.  I spotted this Pottery Barn pic on TLC and immediately turned … [Read more...]

Light It Up

What's that I see?  Why, it's my kitchen!  This dark hole finally has task lighting!I freely admit that I'm needy and require sufficient light to both cook and  avoid burning myself.  I know, gah, why must I be so nitpicky?  Good cooks can do it blindfolded.  Burns add character.  And I shouldn't keep spray paint next to the PAM, anyway. My uncle (aka Super HandyMan) has become my enabler and has installed three new recessed lights and the new lighting fixture I picked up from IKEA.The placement … [Read more...]

Jewelry Drawer Redone

Jewelry is a wearable form of art, and yet I treat it like junk.  It lives cramped and crumpled in a decorative bowl beside my bed... lost inside our overnight bags... in purses I didn't bother to clean out when switching to a new one... laying around in the bathroom, etc.  Time to rangle them up and take inventory of what I have, so at the very least, I don't buy the same earrings again. Thanks to my new dresser, our master closet is no longer overflowing with mounds of clean laundry with no … [Read more...]

Wishlisting

I've recently received some fantastic news.  Just when I feel like I'm reaching a mental block for redesigning my master bath, I get word from my mom that my aunt and uncle are planning on spending a few weeks in Georgia in the fall.  And they said that they would love to come and help us around the house while they are here.  Whaaaaa? This. Is. HUGE.  My uncle has tons of experience in home remodeling. He's actually an expert.  And my aunt absolutely loves gardening and landscaping, so she wants … [Read more...]

Coulda Been a Contender

Ok, so this isn't a lamp... but I think that my most recent thrift store find could have easily been entered into Better After's Ugly Lamp Contest from this month!Isn't she absolutely hideous?  What could I have possibly seen that caused me to plunk down $12 to bring her home?Well, for lack of a better way to describe it at the moment, please trust that I have a vision for this piece... and no, I have not lost my mind.  It will take a bit of elbow grease to get her how I want, but it should look … [Read more...]

Not a Fan

I'm taking a brief hiatus from our all-encompassing flooring installation to do some research on light fixtures. When moving into the "UD" house, you couldn't walk 5 feet without hitting your head (ok, I'm too short, but Scott would) on an ugly, dusty old ceiling fan.  The three that were in the kitchen and dining room (seriously, there were TWO in the kitchen - ???) were out the door as fast as they could go.  They really helped to show the value of painting our ceilings, however. The fans that … [Read more...]
