New Copper Light Fixture in the Dining Room

copper light fixture in the dining room

When it comes to this house, the only significant lighting changes I've ever really made in the last couple of years have been in the kitchen and bathrooms. But now that the dining room has finally reached a decorative stage, I took a little time this past weekend to install something I'm really excited about: Since I haven't done many lighting projects in the house, Dad briefly came over with some extra tools (and to drop off sugar cookies... it seems Mom's in a baking mood). He took … [Read more...]

Reader Remarks: Six DIY Chandelier Projects

favorite diy chandelier projects

Every now and then, I get an email that seems more suited for answering as a blog post (especially if I've asked the same question at some point in this DIY process myself). This time, it's all about lighting: Hi Sarah, Your blog is great, very funny. ... I was wondering if you had any good ideas about a really cheap way to build a really nice front door/entry chandelier? Where would you find the stuff to build it really cheap? Thanks, John Hi John! Unfortunately, my house really … [Read more...]

Light Fixture Progress

Ramping up for another exam week (yes, they really are as frequent as they seem - I'm already counting down the days until this mini-mester is over and I can have a normal life again).I'm spending any free DIY time to work on the staircase (new update on that tomorrow for Dueling DIY Tuesday), and a few scattered plans like my fun little light fixture project.  Last time I posted about it, I'd only collected a handful of supplies (though to be fair, I did buy out the store's entire quantity, … [Read more...]

Sputnik Pursuits

I have said on more than one occasion that I have project A.D.D. (For a brief moment, I was going to call it "PADD" for short.  And then I realized that referring to myself as "succumbing to PADD" or "it's PADD time again" would make me sound like I am really over-sharing).My project A.D.D. is the reason why I can't keep my house clean.  I stop and start so frequently you'd think I was my old Mercury Sable (ba-dum-bum).  And not keeping the house clean is the reason why I can't take updated … [Read more...]

A Futzing Find

wire bowl

My drill crapped out on me last night.  And don't you think it's perfect timing considering the project I decided to take on this week? And instead of immediately going to the store to buy a new one, I futzed around Target's clearance aisle after work yesterday.  Because if there's one thing I'm good at, I'm brilliant at wasting time.  Gold medal in the Procrastinator Olympics over here.  But I'm glad I did, because I found several of these: Technically, they are wire bowls.  I'm holding it … [Read more...]

Lighting Luck

I find it nearly impossible to stay focused on a single task in the house.  So when I can't take the mess anymore, I let go by finding a finishing touch of some kind - usually a pillow, rug, or a piece of art.  Lately, I seem to be on a light fixture streak. It all started with an unexpected discovery at a brief trip to TJ Maxx.  Still feeling zero buyer's remorse.  These suckers are staying. My usual perusing through Pinterest later the same week turned up this photo:Source: Uploaded by user via … [Read more...]

Get Your Fix(ture)

If you follow the Ugly Duckling House on Twitter, you may have seen my recent lighting obsession... well, explode.  No, I didn't get hacked.  I just can't get enough of funky pendant lighting and have been posting all of my finds to my Pinterest inspiration board.  I'm especially loving lighting that is Moroccan-inspired or Turn-of-the-Century looking (you may recall my swoon fest last month). If you are in the market for light fixtures and think that $1000+ is a reasonable price tag (you lucky, … [Read more...]

The Ol’ Switcheroo

Here's a simple concept.Light switch goes up, light goes on.  Light switch goes down, light goes off.Not so in the UD House.Until recently, all three of my upstairs bedrooms have had ceiling fans (ugly ones, of course) that required a pull cord to turn the light on and off.  The switch next to the doorway is just to psych you out every. single. time. you walk into the room.  My lifelong habit of flipping a light switch when entering a dark room still happens in this house even when I know … [Read more...]
