We are finally FINISHED with painting the primary bedroom!

Our hard work has paid off:  instead of a deep blue (which isn’t a bad color, but doesn’t work with the tranquil and fresh feeling I’m going for), we have successfully covered it with a serene driftwood gray. See a photo of my room inspiration here.

Because the blue was so dark, we first edged and painted the entire room in KILZ primer matched to the new color.

Gray may not be everyone’s cup-o-tea, but it’s a VERY big color trend in the design world right now, so thankfully I had a plethora of choices. For the trim, we again painted it white and replaced the old blinds with 2″ faux wood.

So without further ado, here is the boring before (taken right after I closed, so no furniture):

And here is the new and tranquil after with gray walls and white trim! It makes the room feel so much more relaxing. These photos were taken in the evening, so later this week I’ll be posting more daylight pictures on the house tour page.

Of course, the walls are not the only thing we are changing in this room. The old brown carpet will need to be replaced (which is why I didn’t care about getting paint on it), and the lighting fixtures are heading their way to Craigslist/the thrift store shortly.

I also have some plans for a new dresser and nightstands. As it is now, I don’t have matching furniture (and Scott’s using a small outdoor table for his nightstand), but given time and budget, I’ll be updating you again with more changes. Let me know what you think!

  2. Love the gray! We just painted our dining room a dark gray and it looks great. What exact color did you use for the bedroom?

  3. Thanks Chelsea and Amy!

I used Valspar's Montpelier Ashlar Gray. The first coat was Valspar but hated it (more on that later) and then I matched it with Behr paint. Flat Enamel finish.

  4. Love the paint color! Interestingly enough, we have 3 swatches of paint on our family room walls since we are planning on repainting and that's one of the colors! :)

  5. I love your new paint color! It's so elegant and sophisticated! Great job!

  6. Gray has been my new fav color for awhile now. I'm hoping to paint my family room gray…soon! Great job!!

  7. Linda, Amanda and Val, thank you for stopping by my blog! I'm very glad you like the color!

    1. Just plain, out-of-the-can, semi-gloss white. No actual paint matching required, which works for me! :)

  8. Hi Sarah,

The new color of your house look amazing. You mentioned it was originally Valspar’s Montpelier Ashlar Gray and you didn’t like it. Then you changed it to ‘Behr paint Flat Enamel finish’. What exactly was the color name or code for Behr brand which was similar to Valspar’s Montpelier Ashlar Gray?

    Thank you in advance!

    1. It’s the same exact color, but color matched. So I took the paint swatch of Valspar’s MAG (such a long name, so I abbreviated!) and asked the Home Depot guys to match the color but use Behr paint. I just liked the paint quality better.

  9. What a beautiful bedroom. Very nice transformation.I have never seen anything like this.Very amazing and clever use of space. I am not a fan of a huge space and I am living in a small house, I might design my bedroom just like this, thank you for sharing. This is such an inspiration.
