Our mantel isn’t getting much of the Halloween treatment, but I believe it’s not always the big items that can make a display spookier. Take this little spider, for example.
I picked him up in a two-pack at the dollar store. He sits precariously on top of the flat screen TV, which makes him look all the more real. The fact that there is so little Halloween decor surrounding him is what I feel makes this little guy look like he’s strangely there… but not there. I even sometimes find myself doing a double-take; which as any horror film buff knows, that’s what scary movies are made of.
On the other side of the mantel, there are two smoky purple vases with a dollar store crow sitting in front. I posted about this set last month, but the original plan was to dress it up even further. Instead, I’ve decided to leave it as is. I feel it’s just as subtle as the spider, so the sparse decor creates a creepy vibe without being over-the-top Halloween-y.
Currently, there are two other spots in the living room that up the spook factor, but they are more obvious. One is the corner cauldron filled with skulls; again, most of these items came from the dollar store, and they fill up an otherwise bare spot in the house. The other is our coffee table, which due to the mess of our kitchen floor install is not quite ready for its photo debut.
Unfortunately, the complete lack of furniture has limited Halloween decoration in other areas of the house. My lack of surface area means that I’ll likely have to wait until next year to see more areas to play with, but for now, I’m happy with the living room setup. What is your favorite place to dress up for Halloween? Feel free to post a link in your comment if you would like to show it off!
That spider would freak me out every time I watched TV, lol. It's perfect for Halloween.
