For the Chilly Pooch

When I began removing the carpet nearly a year ago, it quickly became apparent that Colby would not adapt to the smoother floor nearly as well as Scott and I would. Many of you probably think I’m cruel for laughing at the poor dog as he went kerflump the first time down the stairs, but when you have a clumsy dog like Colby (who regularly runs into the back yard fence when he’s not paying enough attention), you learn to take his uncoordinated movements in stride.

As of late, Colby is much more careful when running back into the house. A few times skidding across the floor has taught him (and us) to be more careful when trying to get somewhere in a hurry. It’s only recently though that we noticed another issue affecting our goofy, lovable pet:  the floor is cold. And as much as his fur keeps him warm, the dog is still inclined to run upstairs and cozy up in the bedroom rather than lay by us as we watch TV in the living room.

For a while, I was shopping for an additional dog bed (I was already looking to replace the ratty one Colby has destroyed in the bedroom). That is, until I found a much more convenient solution:  a floor blanket. Basically, it’s the equivalent of a dog bed that was never stuffed with filling.

What’s great about this is that it is fluffy and warm, keeping Colby happy, and it also rolls away easy for when we have company visiting and don’t want a blanket in the middle of the floor. Plus, it serves as more of a catchall for dog hair so that we don’t have fur tufting into the air or collecting in corners; instead, we just throw it into the wash. Easy.

Next up, I’ll have to make good on my promise to find him a better dog bed for the primary bedroom. Since he’s so large, and the bed will take up so much floor space, it must coordinate with the decor to be less of an eyesore. Does anyone know of a good online shop or retail spot in the Atlanta area? Thanks!

  1. Our pooches wont lay on a dog bed to save their life (the cats on the other hand LOVE to claim them). Now a pile of dirty laundry is a new game entirely haha

  2. I have a precious, handicapped Shih Tzu that I take care of better then myself! When she was only 3 months old, she was shut in a door and was instantly paralyzed from her mid-back to her legs. I must have at least 15 dog beds for her so she can be comfortable at all times!!! She adores all of them and has never been happier! To top it off, the beds I get stay clean naturally thanks to nanotechnology! I couldn’t recommend them more! 
