It’s no secret that my back yard has a lot of issues. I also don’t have the time to send it to a shrink. So whenever possible, and especially when I’m doing things that require more muscle than brain power (like sanding drywall), I try to think of ways that I can make an improvement without a lot of effort. Pretty, colorful flower pots? Scour Craigslist maybe? And how am I going to fill in that sink hole?

By happy accident, while drooling over the new collection of stuff I don’t need at World Market, I found these:

How perfect. Interlocking outdoor deck tiles are simple, easy to install over a cement patio with little prep, and instantly dresses up a boring slab. Of course, the next thing I did was do a Google image search of the different possibilities. It’s a great solution for just about anyone since it’s removable (so you renters have this option, too). And now I’m daydreaming about a cool new patio that is more within my reach than ever.

  1. I saw somewhere they had these at IKEA and someone had used them to create a spa-style bathmat (they had to dremel off the plastic connectors – but this looks like a corner piece!?). Anyway, I don't think IKEA carries it anymore (and also it might stain whatever floor is underneath it).

Anyway, I was tootling around the internet and what did I randomly run into? Your face! Have you seen this? http://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-fogles-renovates-her-ugly-duckling-house-2012-8

  2. @Jinja – Yes, I saw it! It was very exciting. And as for the tiles from Ikea, I think it was Allison from House of Hepworths that made a bath mat out of them. They look small in her photos, though, so I think I'm going to be on the hunt for some larger tiles to create more of a plank look.

  3. That is awesome! Now, if only someone came up with a similar product for us renters who have carpet and are DYING for hardwood floors. :)

  4. Do you think it would work OVER horrible outdoor porch carpet? I hate that stuff so much, but aside from renovating the entire porch (we rent – NOT gonna happen) I cant find way to make it look better.

  5. Nice… when you find some and try it out, let me know. That might be what our slab out back needs!

  6. out door patio tiles are great we used some from ikea in this balcony makeover (how2home.wordpress.com/2012/06/02/how-to-boxshrub/) its really affordable and looks great

  7. So far, I've heard Ikea as the best source of this, but I'm going to try to find some longer ones that might be more of a plank and less of a square look. I'll let you know what I find!
