I spend a lot of my time shuffling back and forth between my house and the home improvement store. I often don’t wear makeup in this situation for a number of reasons. For one, I live alone, and Charlie hasn’t really had much of an opinion about me wearing any. I also sweat when I DIY, and I don’t like makeup running in my eyes when I’m ripping down wallpaper. Thirdly, and perhaps most important, I find that the guys at Home Depot take me more seriously when I look like death warmed over.

So, you might be wondering why I’d even bother posting about makeup today. I don’t post a lot of pictures of myself on the blog because I’m too scared of how ghastly I’ll look if I show you what’s behind the camera (trust me, a nasty picture of the door is a lot better than what’s going on with my face most of the time). But, I’m a former beauty junkie. I used to be really into makeup and hair products and reading everything I ever could about ingredients and the latest in the beauty world. And when I do go out to meet friends, I still wear makeup – only now I want to have multitasking wonder products that still make me look like I pay just as much attention to beauty mags as I used to. In other words, this girl has tested a lot of products and whittled it down to the best o’ the best for that elusive “five-minute-face” that women like me are always after. The kind of moments when I have just enough energy to swipe some eyeshadow on before walking out the door.

Actually, that’s a total lie – I put makeup on at traffic lights.

Beauty and Makeup Gift Ideas (That Work Just as Hard as My Favorite Power Tools)

Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 or CoverGirl Lipslicks Lipgloss in Daring – I switch back and forth between these two, and they usually give me about the same color and sheer coverage. I love the Fresh Sugar balm during winter though because it’s rich and super moisturizing. (I’ve also heard good things  about Maybelline’s Baby Lips but haven’t tried it yet)

Garnier  Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream, Light/Medium – seriously, this is an unbelievable product for my skin. The issue with tinted moisturizers is often not enough coverage; the issue with foundation is that it can be a little heavy for everyday use. When I first heard about this cream (before it sold in drug stores), I was checking weekly to find out if I could purchase it yet. And when I finally did, it was instant love:  perfect sheer coverage, moisturizes, evens my skin tone, doesn’t leave my fingers feeling greasy after I apply, and has a daily SPF. My skin is glowy and I no longer use stick foundation. I don’t think it would work for everyone, but I have combination skin and I’ve found this works during both summer and winter without seriously compromising my acne skincare (my skin seems to be even more sensitive now than when I was in my teens when it comes to breakouts).

Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara in Black – My lashes are short and flat as a pancake before I curl them (with a curler). I swipe this mascara on to hold and separate them, and it instantly opens up my tired eyes. I’m talking va-va-voom lashes for girls who aren’t blessed with a lot of natural plumage.

Almay Wake Up Eyeshadow and Primer in Exhilarate – I use the light color all over and the sparkly gray/brown for my lids. The deep plummy purple is great for a shadow liner and really makes my blue eyes pop.
