The blast from a can of spray paint is apparently too much for fake fruit from the dollar store.

These pears (should they stop rolling long enough to catch them) will be used for the Christmas dining table, but first they have to stay still long enough to paint.

Even though the outside will be looking like it was turned into a confectionery, the inside will still be classic silver, gold, white and red. I’m just getting a head start.

Or rather, I suppose the fruit is.

  1. Hi Sarah,
I have a project in mind that involves spray painting artificial fruit gold. Since most artificial fruits are made of poly foam, I am worried that the spray paint will “melt” the fruit. Did this happen to you?

    Two other questions:
    1) what spray paint brand did you use, and would you recommend it?
    2) how did you go about spray painting the fruit so they didn’t roll around?

    Thanks!
    Yvonne

    1. Yvonne,

No, I didn’t experience any melting, but I was also using plastic fruit. To spray foam without melting it, you need to spray VERY ilght mists about a foot away from the object. Light coats won’t eat it like a close-up spray will.
      1) Krylon
      2) I applied really light coats and the fruit didn’t roll around enough to make me want to do anything about it. But i would suggest maybe poking thumbtacks through the back of a piece of cardboard so the little ends poke up, which will act like small stoppers to keep rolling to a minimum (you could also use nails, screws, or toothpicks, whatever works).

      Good luck!
