No, not poltergeists (though, it was Halloween weekend, so good guess!).

My aunt and uncle have finally made their very long trip from Wisconsin down to see the house. And they come bearing superpowers.

Duh da ta da! It’s Handy Man!

This superhero comes with his own tools and is capable of things like this:

…in a single afternoon. As you can see in the above photo, my uncle has sucessfully added an above-the-range microwave (purchased once again from Brandsmart – in and out in less than 20 minutes for a $200 stainless microwave!). How did he do it, you might ask? He moved our cabinetry.

This is the kind of thing that would have taken Scott and I weeks to complete. What’s funny is that we also discovered something new about our kitchen. Before the ugly wallpaper, there was more ugly wallpaper.

To plug the new microwave in, my uncle added an outlet in the cabinet. Which, of course, will really come in handy if/when I want to add rope lighting above the cabinets.

Don’t be surprised if this kind of progress comes with a little bit of a mess. Right on the very spot you were going to cook dinner to thank your very helpful superheroes.
But, no matter. A quick cleanup for now. What was going to be Sunday dinner will now become Friday’s dinner.

And that’s not all thats going on in the kitchen. Since the new flooring will raise the floor level a quarter inch or so, our fridge will no longer fit where it needs to go (we already had to shave the cabinet down when we first bought it). So, my uncle moved those cabinets as well to make extra room.

And this is only part of the first day. He and my aunt are here for a full week. I’m pretty excited. Can ya tell?

  1. I love help from family! The same goes for us – what would take us weeks to months to complete, we can usually accomplish in a few days with help from family.

    God bless them.

    P.S. I <3 that cape.

  2. Wow, that's awesome! Totally worth making a few good home-cooked meals for that kind of help!

  3. Hi Sarah,
Love reading your posts! Very inspiring!
I saw your post about your superhero uncle installing a microwave over the range. I see this a lot on American websites. And I am always wondering, is there some kind of ventilation device underneath the microwave? Instead of an extractor hood? Put me out of my misery ?

    1. The microwave has a ventilation setup on the bottom (along with a kitchen light so you can see the stovetop). These appliances are expressly listed as an “over-the-range” microwave, so it’s different from the type that would just sit on the counter. Hope that ends the mystery!

      1. Thank you so much Sarah! You answered! And now I know it’s actually a very clever thing. Thanks again.
